Toenail was peeling offf help!!!!!?

Ok on my right foot its the 3rd toe from the big one. I think i may have dropped something on it at work because it suddenly hurt oneday. So i looked and down the middle there was a crack and it hurt so bad. So i wraped it up because i had work for the rest of the week. So about a week later i noticed that it hasnt been hurting. So i went to unwrap it and to my surprise there was no pain but when i lifted the nail up it didnt hurt at all so i peeled the half off because it would get caught in my sock or something. So now i have this sensitive skin which i have to wrap up. Anyone know what this is or why it didnt hurt anymore? Will it grow back? I have half a good nail now with the rest half gone. Thanks
